About Ben Carroll
“My most vivid childhood memory is when I was about three, trying to make a boat out of three old pieces of wood. It didn’t work. Then I realised there was an easier way; re-use the pigs’ iron feed-trough to make a boat. Thats where my obsession with recycling and boats began and I can’t shake it off.
I have spent my life acquiring the skills to make my ideas come to life in wood, steel, glass, cloth or fibreglass. I gather materials that are mostly from the sea; yachts, boats, sails, rope and tons of jetty timber, although there are many farm artifacts that I can’t resist. These materials have history within, not to mention beautiful shapes, colours and texture. Old materials have another unique quality; soul. If I handle them properly then maybe that soul will show through.”
